If it was a school debate on who the winner is in the 10 day Air India pilot strikecalled off on Friday, May 6, the judges would sure have a tough time deciding whether the strikers or the government had reason to celebrate?Far easier would be to say who the losers are – certainly the passengers and the already bad bottomline of the once Maharaja carrier.The ending of the strike can be termed face saving for both sides, as both the parties had to swallow what they set out to do in the first place.The pay parity question -m ain cause of the strike – has been delayed till November when a panel is to report on the subject, along with other issues. The government stand that it will not talk before the strike is called off was also not kept.But the strikers won on the demand that the suspended leaders are taken back and the association be once again recognised.One victim of the strike may be the CMD Arvind Jadhav, who has almost been singled out by the pilots as the person they did not want to deal with. A new man may be in command, say sources, but this may take time as the government may not like to give the impression of agreeing to pilots’ threats and conditions. At one stage, talk of hiring outside pilots and even lockout seemed serious and if this was done, things would have gone from bad to worse.
