Cinemas topped a list of features travellers would most like to see at airports.
A global survey of more than 10,000 travellers, undertaken by travel search site Skyscanner, found that most airline passengers, not content with watching movies while in the air, also want to catch the latest films while they’re waiting for a flight.
An airport cinema was selected by 49% of flyers in the Skyscanner poll, making it by far the most popular choice. Sleeping pods were selected by 36% of travellers, making them the second most popular facility, and despite the rise of e-books, 32% of travellers said they would like to see airports equipped with their own libraries. This would allow travellers to take out a book before departure and return it after landing back home.
Travellers also appear keen for some open space, with an airport park (31%) the fourth most popular pick, ahead of an area for spa and beauty treatments (30%), kids play area (21%) and swimming pool (20%).
Less popular suggestions were a gym (15%), manmade beach (12%) and bicycles (11%), while the least popular pick was an airport karaoke area, selected by just 5% of travellers.
“Whilst many of the larger airports are beginning to offer passengers a wider range of facilities, there is clearly a great demand for airport entertainment, especially for those travelling with young children,” said Skyscanner’s Victoria Bailie.
“By offering fun experiences at airports, such as the golf course at Hong Kong International Airport or the swimming pool and jacuzzi at Changi Airport in Singapore, waiting for a flight becomes less or a chore and more part of the holiday itself.”
There were differences between male and female respondents, with a huge 45% of women wanting a vanity area to freshen up, and more male travellers selecting swimming pools and bike hire. Both sexes agreed however, that the cinema was the most sought-after facility. And they may not have to wait too long; Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) already features an IMAX cinema with 2D and 3D theatres.
