India’s Ministry of Tourism has announced plans to undertake a major programme to clean up the historic Assi Ghat in Varanasi.
Following the recent renovation of the ghat, which is a popular recreational site for Indian travellers and a focal point for festivals, Dr Mahesh Sharma, India’s Tourism Minister, has launched a special cleaning campaign at the site.
This has already included the construction of new public toilets, and will be extended with the start of a major beautification campaign including a clean-up of the Ganges River and the use of boats to ferry garbage from the city to rubbish dumps.
Garbage disposal is a major problem in the historic city due to its narrow lanes.
Dr Sharma said the plan for the development and beautification of Varanasi’s ghats of Varanasi and cleaning of Ganges is fulfilling “the wishes of Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi”.
Plans are also being finalised to hold light and sound shows at the Assi Ghat.
