Starwood has opened a new Sheraton resort in Okinawa, marking the upscale brand’s return to the Japanese island chain.
The former Sun Marina Hotel has undergone a major renovation and has now reopened as the Sheraton Sunmarina Resort. Located on Sunmarina Beach on Okinawa’s main island, the resort has initially opened with 200 rooms and suites, but a new wing will be completed by December 2016, adding 46 more rooms and extra facilities.
“This is an exciting chapter in the Sheraton brand’s history as we bring Starwood’s most global and iconic brand back to Okinawa,” said Lothar Pehl, Starwood’s senior vice president of operations & global initiatives for Asia Pacific.
“Catering to leisure and business travellers alike, Sheraton will deliver its highly-personalised service, premium amenities and compelling programming to ensure an effortless stay for guests in this tropical oasis.”
Initially, the resort’s facilities include an all-day restaurant, lounge, and 260m² of indoor function space. But the brand new South Wing will add a beach bar, two more restaurants, a wedding chapel, and a new wellness centre with an indoor pool, gym, communal bath, spa and beachside café.
Sheraton Okinawa Sunmarina Resort is located approximately 60 minutes’ drive from Naha Airport. It becomes Starwood’s 20th hotel in Japan, and its ninth Sheraton. And the company’s Japanese expansion will continue next month with the opening of the Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho, which will join Starwood’s Luxury Collection.
