Plans have been revealed for a new rail service connecting Delhi with the UNESCO-listed Kaziranga National Park in Assam.
The Press Trust of India (PTI) reports that the new “Kaziranga Express” has been proposed by Rajen Gobain, India’s Minister of State for Railways, who hails from Assam.
The line, which would cover more than 2,000km, would operate along similar lines as the Tiger Express services that have recently been introduced between Delhi with Bandhavgarh and Kanha national parks in Madhya Pradesh.
Kaziranga National Park is home to the world’s largest population of single-horned rhinoceroses, along with tigers, elephants and other species.
Anurag Singh, managing director of the Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC), said that a report on the project is likely to be finalised this month.
“We are working on an itinerary. We need to work on a model which we can sustain for a long time,” he was quoted saying by the PTI.
This itinerary could also incorporate the Kamakhya Temple, Manas National Park and Assam’s tea plantations. Like the Tiger Express services, passengers would be offered full packages including train travel, accommodation, meals, transfers and safari tours.
