The Thai government is aiming to cut energy consumption in thetransport sector by 14% by 2011 - the equivalent of three million tons of oil. With just 4,000km of railways, Thailandrelies heavily on road transport, which account for approximately 88% of totaltransport use annually.
Under the programme, business operators have been encouraged to pooltheir resources to make maximum use of vehicles and containers. Many trucks, for example, return to their bases empty after delivering a shipment, when theycould be carrying goods both ways. Additionally, rail and marine transport wouldbe promoted at lower costs.
