Air France crash report cites faulty speed readings

A report into the crash of an Air France aircraft in June 2009 has found that “inconsistency” between cockpit speed readings was a key factor in the incident. The French Accident Investigation Bureau (BEA) report detailed the moments leading up to the Atlantic Ocean crash, revealing that the Airbus A330 travelling from Rio de Janeiro to Paris stalled twice during a lightning storm before plunging into the ocean.
The co-pilot, referred to as ‘PF’ in the report, was reported to have disengaged autopilot when the plane encountered difficulties, saying; “I have the controls”, before the plane began to roll to the right and the stall warning sounded. The report then quoted the Captain as saying “we’ve lost the speeds”.
Slightly later, the co-pilot was reported saying “I don’t have any more indications”, and the captain added, “we have no valid indications”.
