A series of industrial mega-projects undertaken in Surabaya have attracted investors to build new hotels in the country, the Jakarta Post has reported an Indonesian business researcher as saying.
Aslakhul Umam of PT Building Construction and Interchange (BCI) Asia said that seven new hotels with a total investment of INR1 trillion (US$21.9 billion) are to be built in Surabaya within the next two years thanks to the projects.
The projects include oil and gas exploration by ExxonMobil, the Surabaya-Mojokerto toll road project, and the Suramadu bridge project connecting Surabaya and Bangkalan.
According to the report, the new hotels will include the Oval Hotel by PT Surya Karang Indah, the Aston Hotel by Aston International, the Meritus and City of Tomorrow Hotels by PT Arya Duta and two other hotels by Ciputra World.
“The projects, which employ local and foreign employees and executives, will need new hotels because of the limited capacity of the existing ones,” Aslakhul said, adding that the renovation of the Surabaya’s Juanda International Airport will also contribute to the increasing demand for accommodation in the city.
