The 2011 World Figure Skating Championships, scheduled to be hosted in Tokyo from 21-27 March have been cancelled, following Friday’s massive earthquake. The sport’s governing body, the International Skating Union (ISU), issued a statement yesterday saying that the decision was taken due to the current travel advisories in place for Japan. The World Team Trophy, scheduled to be held in Yokohama in April, has also been cancelled.
Meanwhile, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has postponed the Asian Champions League matches due to take place in Japan this week. Nagoya Grampus 8 were due to play Al Ain today, while Kashima Antlers were expecting to host Sydney FC tomorrow. Japan’s international friendly football matches against Montenegro and New Zealand are also in doubt.
