Taiwan recently established its first ecotourism corridor. The project was initiated in response to Typhoon Morakot which devastated four aboriginal villages in August last year. The project was designed to preserve the local culture which was threatened when the storm destroyed their villages. Through the initiative, they have been able to return to their homes and now run two-day tours to each village, allowing visitors to experience the local culture and ecology. Speaking to Taiwan Today, Dawu village chief Peng Yu-hua, expressed the hope that participating in the ecotourism project would help rebuild the self-confidence of local residents.
