Air Astana celebrated its 13th birthday this month.
Kazakhstan’s national carrier, which is a joint venture between BAE Systems and Kazakhstan’s national wealth fund, Samruk Kazyna, launched its first flight from Almaty to Astana on 15 May 2002. Since then, it has expanded to a network of 64 routes connecting 39 international and domestic destinations, which it serves with a fleet of 30 aircraft.
In the past year alone Air Astana has launched new flights from Astana to Paris and Bangkok, added frequencies from Astana to London and the relaunched its Almaty-Dubai route.
This growth will continue on 2 June 2015 with the launch of flights from Astana to Seoul and Tbilisi.
“Another remarkably successful year has passed for Air Astana, with continued profitable growth and new service innovations adding to the established reputation for consistently safe, reliable, convenient and high quality air service,” said Peter Foster, president of Air Astana. “Winning the ATW Airline Market Leader of the Year was a proud moment for every one of our 4,000 staff and serves to confirm Air Astana’s proud status as Central Asia’s leading carrier.”
Air Astana posted an operating profit of US$97.7 million in 2014, the highest in the company’s history and an increase of 35% over 2013.
