Air New Zealand has hit back at recent reports by Qantas and by the Commerce Commission in relation to the on-going cargo price-fixing case, saying that they are “misleading and defamatory”. The national carrier said it was “surprised” that a Qantas statement on the issue appeared to implicate Air NZ. It also criticised the Commerce Commission for giving the impression that Air NZ was “guilty and simply awaiting trial”.
In relation to the Qantas, Air NZ said in a statement that the Australian carrier “appears to be pursuing a strategy of trying to implicate other airlines in cartel investigations in the hope of securing more lenient treatment of its own conduct”. Last week, Qantas issued a statement saying that it “will plead guilty to participating in the cartel with other international airlines, including Air New Zealand”.
