Robert Goodwill has expressed his surprise at the recent court ruling against Jet2.com.
Speaking at the ABTA Travel Matters conference today, the Aviation Minister said he would ‘look carefully’ at the case and its potential implications for the industry.
The airline failed an appeal in courts last week that would mean airlines must pay out compensation for flights where a technical fault is the reason for a delay longer than three hours. Jet2.com has said it will take the appeal to the Supreme Court.
Goodwill added there is a debate in Brussels over when compensation should come into effect after three hours or five hours of delay.
Kate Jennings later added: “We support the 5/9/12 hour trigger points and the objective is to minimise the costs on the industry but still offer the right protection.”
She said it will be only once the trigger points are confirmed that a decision on compensation for connecting flights would be considered.
