Belgium is a popular tourist spot, with famous city destinations such as Bruges and Gent. Tourism authorities there are now intent on carving out a share of the Indian market, but to do so, it must first increase product awareness among Indian travellers. So says Peter De Wilde, CEO of Flanders Belgium, who addressed a meeting of trade partners in Delhi on 24 March.
Indians clocked up some 85,000 room nights in Belgium last year, which translates into about 40,000 visitors on an average stay of two days. Popularity does seem to be growing. De Wilde revealed that as well as wrapping Belgium into European package tours, some agents had shown interest in promoting the country as a solo destination, for four-five nights stays.
The Jet Airways hub in Brussels, the diamond Antwerp connection and many Indian restaurants were factors which will help boost the traffic from India, said De Wilde, who admitted that after the downturn in the primary generating markets of France, Holland, UK and Germany, attention was being paid to India and China.
