Nearly half of Brits say that travelling for business is more like a ‘mini holiday’ than being at work, new research from Amba Hotels has revealed.
The business travelling public relish the idea of swapping a desk lunch for room service and getting away from the daily slog. ‘Paid for expenses’ (42%),‘a nice hotel’ (30%) and ‘working lunches’ (19%) are the top three reasons why Brits look forward to business trips.
The hotel company and Goldsmiths’ consumer psychologist Patrick Fagan have worked together on the research which explores what the public truly think of business travel, and the impact business trips can have on our wellbeing and career.
When questioned about their experiences of business trips, exactly half of those surveyed felt that business travel is ‘more fun than it used to be’ and 49% said that ‘having a break from the family’ was the main reason they liked going away on business.
Women and men view business trips differently too. While men go on business trips more frequently than women, their attitudes towards business trips are vastly different. Some 16% of women find business trips ‘relaxing’ while 17% of men see them more as a ‘hassle’.
The research also revealed that those who are in a high earning bracket, are educated to at least a postgraduate level and who already feel engaged in their regular day jobs are more likely to view their work trips as a time of leisure. Nearly 60% of those who had a combination of all three of the above factors said they felt that a business trip was like a ‘mini holiday’.
Goldsmiths’ consumer psychologist Patrick Fagan said: “It’s fascinating to see that nearly half of Brits are re-defining the business trip as a ‘mini holiday’ rather than work. It’s clear that a change of scenery and perks such as all-expenses-paid dinners and hotel services are enticing. People really value getting away from the daily routine.”
