Business travel bookings have surpassed the leisure sector for Virgin Trains, it has revealed.
The train operator said corporate sales for the 12 weeks up to 22 June were up 12% compared to last year, driven predominantly by the banking sector.
Tour operators were at the fifth position of the biggest increases in spend with the company, up 12.5% compared to last year.
More are booking its off-peak and advanced tickets to save money which in turn has driven peak prices down 1.2%.
Overall 4.3% more journeys were taken in the 12 weeks year-on-year, with two thirds (61%) citing its advertising campaign as the reason they booked. The company has also expanded its advanced reservation capacity due to its longer Pendolino trains that were introduced in December.
“We have seen substantial increases in leisure travel over the last five years, but it has been tough for UK businesses. The increases we are now seeing in business travel suggest that the UK economy is on the move again,” said Graham Leech, executive director, commercial at Virgin Trains.
