World Tourism Day - mooted by the World Tourism Organisation - will be hosted by Peru next year and Ghana in 2009.
The theme for Peru will focus on the tourism sector’s response to the challenges of climate change. Next year’s theme also coincides with the proclamation of 2008 as the International Year of Planet Earth which will extend to 2009.
The WTO said the theme would contribute to moves to implement the Davos Declaration (Climate Change and Tourism - Responding top Global Challenges). The Declaration builds on the tourism sector’s strong relationship with climate and its role in sustainable development.
When Ghana hosts it in 2009, the WTO said the theme will “celebrate tourism diversity and implement a campaign to highlight the importance of tourism and globalisation”.
These were the outcomes of the 17th Session of the UNWTO General Assembly held in Colombia late last month.
