Overlooking Hyde Park and just moments from the shopping paradise of Oxford Street, The Lancaster London occupies an enviable position in the heart of London’s desirable Bayswater district.
And in this quintessentially English location, adjacent to Lancaster Gate Underground Station and surrounded by grand Victorian-era properties, it may come as a surprise to find oneself greeted with attentive Thai-style hospitality.
But this is what awaits guests at The Lancaster London, whose Thai owners also boast The Landmark Hotel in Bangkok (both properties are members of Preferred Hotels & Resorts). This heritage allows the hotel to combine the very best of British style and Asian charm.
Above the hotel’s entrance, the Thai flag flutters alongside the Union Jack, and the expansive lobby area combines classical furniture with decorative Thai adornments. And this Asian heritage comes to the fore at the Nipa Thai restaurant – an oriental gem that attracts diners from far and wide with its authentic Thai cuisine. It’s no surprise that on the day we dined at Nipa Thai, the restaurant was filled to capacity with diners of all nationalities, including many Thais.
Alternatively The Island Grill, which has been awarded two AA Rosettes, serves up classic British cuisine overlooking Hyde Park, while the Lounge Bar is perfect for a traditional English afternoon tea or after dinner cocktail.
Guests can also choose from a selection of English and Asian dishes at breakfast, which is served in a choice of restaurants either from a buffet or a la carte menu.
All 416 rooms and suites at The Lancaster London are finished to a high standard, with large flat-screen TVs, universal power outlets, free Wi-Fi and spacious bathrooms with bathtubs. We stayed at the Royal Park Suite, which provides 60m² of space with separate bedroom and living areas and spectacular views across London, from the grand arch of Wembley Stadium in the west to new city’s skyscrapers in the east, including The Shard.
But surely the main positional selling point of The Lancaster London is its proximity to, and views across, Hyde Park. Set opposite the 150-year-old Italian Gardens, with their stunning ponds and fountains, the hotel is ideal for guests wanting an alternative to the tourist bustle of the West End. It is especially convenient for families with children, who can spend their days strolling through the park’s 253 hectares of green, open space.
The Lancaster London also provides extensive options for the MICE sector, with 10 event spaces ranging from intimate boardrooms to the vast Nine Kings Suite (another reference to the hotel’s Thai heritage), which can accommodate up to 1,000 people.
Genuine urban retreats are difficult to find in 21st Century London, where the rapid pace of development reflects the city’s position as a global economic and cultural hub. But at The Lancaster London, guests are able to relax in a calm parkland atmosphere and enjoy attentive Asian-style hospitality, while remaining on the doorstep of the city’s many attractions.
This unique location and Anglo-Thai heritage, combined with the international expertise of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, allows The Lancaster London to deliver a hotel experience unlike anything else in the city.
