Thai and Chinese officials have held high-level discussions about tourist safety in the kingdom, following Monday’s deadly bombing in Bangkok.
Four mainland Chinese citizens are now known to have died in the attack, along with two visitors from Hong Kong, and officials from the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Thai Tourist Police and Immigration Bureau met with Chinese authorities on Wednesday to discuss security.
The Thai delegation outlined the measures it had taken to help Chinese victims, including the assignment of multilingual interpreters to hospitals to assist victims and their families. The police also outlined the extra security measures that have been put in place since the attack.
Thailand will be keen to demonstrate that it remains a safe destination for Chinese travellers. More than four million mainland Chinese visited Thailand in the first half of 2015, making it by far the largest source market for the kingdom.
A Thai government spokesperson also said yesterday that Chinese tourists are unlikely to have been the main target for the bombers, and played down speculation linking the attack to Chinese Uighur separatists.
