China’s high-speed railway network now stretches more than 20,000km, following the opening of a line on Saturday.
Xinhua reports that the launch of the 360km line linking Zhengzhou, in central China’s Henan province, with Xuzhou, in eastern China’s Jiangsu province, marked another milestone in the rapid development of the network.
This line will eventually link up with China’s westernmost high-speed railway line, which runs between Lanzhou and Urumqi, creating a complete east-west link.
China’s high-speed rail network has now doubled in length in the last three years, and is expected to reach 45,000km by 2030. It is already the longest high-speed rail network in the world, stretching the equivalent of half way around the Earth.
In 2015, China’s high-speed trains carried more than 960 million passengers.
