The Sri Lankan government has allocated funds for the construction of a coastal hotel in Kaangkeasanthurai in the north of the island to cater for tourists from the South. This is part of government efforts to begin reconstruction in the war-torn area of Vadamaraadchi which it says is riddled with landmines. The Sri Lanka Ministry of Tourism has allocated LKR50 million (INR 199 lakhs) to the construction of a star hotel in Kaangkeasanthu’rai where the ‘Harbour View Hotel’ is located and a hotel management college is also planned for development, reports TamilNet. However, land rights in the area are being disputed and one agency, the Welfare Organizations, has suggested that the security declaration was made to forestall resettlement of families uprooted from the area whose land claims could undermine the tourism development plans.
