Egypt will not promote Cairo and instead focus on the rest of the country as it looks to recover from three years of unrest.
Egypt’s Minister of Tourism Hisham Zaazou said the country will promote Luxor, Aswan and the Red Sea instead.
Only 300,000 people visited Egypt in September 2013, down from 90% in 2012.
Zaazou now has a three-pronged approach to reinvigorate tourism in the country, starting with reinstating Egyptair’s flights from London to Luxor on 17 February.
“Secondly, we will be aggressively communicating with Egypt’s target audiences through PR and communications campaigns including social media and bloggers. And thirdly, we’re working closely with our valued tour operators partners globally to encourage their clients to return or experience Egypt’s wonders for the first time,” he added.
The tourism authority will also put more incentives in place for airlines and tour operators and will grow its live streaming webcams to 25 so tourists can see what is happening.
“I am confident that our pragmatic approach of distancing Cairo from the rest of Egypt coupled with ambitious short and medium term promotional plans will see 2014 being the year that Egypt tourism bounces back,” said Zaazou.
