Hong Kong residents now have a new low-cost way of travelling to Myanmar, with the launch of two new services by HK Express.

The budget airline’s inaugural Myanmar flight touched down in Yangon on 1 September 2016, marking the start of a new scheduled service that will operate four times a week.  And on 5 September, HK Express will commence a second Myanmar route, linking Hong Kong with Mandalay twice a week. The LCC will deploy its 180-seat, all-economy Airbus A320 aircraft on both routes.

HK Express marked its entry into Myanmar with a launch ceremony at Yangon International Airport on Thursday.

“HK Express is dedicated to developing a more connected Asia with affordable flights, new routes and convenient services,” said Andrew Cowen, director & CEO of HK Express. “There is nothing more exhilarating than exploring new cities and cultures, and we are humbled to be a part of the experience.”

U Tin Ohn, general manager of Yangon Aerodrome Company, which operates the city’s airport, added that the new flights will help “promote trade and drive greater knowledge exchange between Hong Kong and Myanmar”.

“Strong and mutually beneficial partnerships such as these will continue to reinforce Myanmar’s status as an aviation and tourism hub,” he added.

The Yangon flights will now operate four times a week, with morning departures from Hong Kong International Airport every Monday and Thursday and afternoon services every Tuesday and Saturday. The Mandalay flights will feature morning departures from HKIA every Monday and Friday.

HK Express is the third airline flying between Hong Kong and Yangon, following Dragonair and Myanmar National Airlines, and becomes the first carrier to link Hong Kong with Mandalay.

Following the addition of the new routes, HK Express now flies to eight Asian countries: Cambodia, China, Japan, Myanmar, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. And the airline will continue to expand in the coming months, with flights to Nha Trang commencing on 9 November and services to Chiang Rai starting on 24 November.
