Cunard’s flagship liner, Queen Mary 2, celebrates its 10th birthday today (8 Jan 14).
The luxury cruise ship was named by HM Queen Elizabeth II on 8 January 2004, and has since undertaken 419 voyages including more than 200 trans-Atlantic crossings, and called at 182 ports in 60 countries.
The ship is now gearing up to depart on its eighth World Cruise on 10 January, when it will sail alongside Queen Elizabeth in Southampton after celebratory fireworks.
The major anniversary will take place on 9 May 2014 when all three Cunard ships will arrive in Southampton together for sail-pasts, lunch and a send-off including more fireworks.
On that day Queen Mary 2 will set out for two commemorative crossings to New York.
“Since entering service in 2004, Queen Mary 2 has reigned supreme on the Atlantic and around the world, proudly carrying more than a million guests. She has attracted awards, accolades and admiration as the greatest ocean liner ever built for a decade and we intend to mark her first ten years of service in style,” said Cunard’s marketing director Angus Struthers.
