Heathrow Airport has told the Airports Commission it is the ‘only option’ for expansion as connections from outside the south east are set to improve.
The airport’s latest submission to the commission will explain how new flights and rail links like High Speed 2 will expand its reach.
When HS2 opens Heathrow will be less than three hours away by public transport for more than 70% of the UK’s population. New access from Great Western will also reduce journey times from Cardiff by 37 minutes.
Heathrow’s submission also puts forward testimonies from businesses based across the country and argues more expansion will not only allow for more international flights but domestic ones too.
“If we want growth for the future we need connections to the world’s fast growing markets and that means a hub airport like Heathrow. But we also need to bring the benefits of additional trade, tourism and economic growth to the whole country, not just to London and the South-East. That is why we are setting out our ambition to connect Heathrow to every economic centre in Britain,” said Colin Matthews, chief executive of Heathrow.
