Heathrow Airport is to make its case for a third runway this week, as it prepares to put a case to the Davies Commission this week.
The chief executive of Heathrow Airport Holdings Colin Matthews will put forward the argument that the UK is on the brink of losing its status as a major hub, with poor links to countries like China in comparison to its European competitors.
Heathrow currently only has flights to two Chinese airports whereas Amsterdam’s Schiphol has five.
In a report by the Sunday Telegraph, the paper said that Matthews will present the proposal for a third runway at Heathrow as the best solution to the UK’s airport dilemma. He is expected to outline potential sites for the runway at a presentation on Wednesday as well as compensation plans for those who need noise insulation or may lose their homes.
The airport is also expected to rule out the need for a fourth runway until 2040 and will explain why ‘mixed mode’ use of the two current runways is not a viable solution.
