Heathrow Airport told the Airports Commission on Friday it can both increase flights and continue to reduce aircraft noise.
If a third runway at the airport was confirmed, Heathrow would commit to reducing noise by encouraging airlines to use quieter aircraft while also lessening noise impact on local residents.
The airport said noise in the area has already reduced tenfold since the 1970s despite the number of flights doubling and predicts a further 10-20% fewer people would see a reduction in noise if a third runway was introduced.
As well as using more fuel-efficient aircraft the airport has also considered runway positions; new flight paths and new noise insulation schemes in its argument.
“Heathrow is at the forefront of international efforts to tackle aircraft noise and as a result, even though the number of flights has almost doubled since the 1970s, around 90% fewer people are affected by noise. The evidence we have submitted to the Commission today [Friday] shows it is possible to add the flights that will boost UK jobs, growth and trade whilst keeping the impact on local residents to a minimum,” said Matt Gorman, Heathrow’s sustainability director.
