India exceeded eight million arrivals in 2015, following the expansion of its e-tourist visa programme.
According to data from the country’s Ministry of Tourism, India welcomed a total of 8,016,000 international visitors last year, up 4.4% compared to 2014. Revenues from incoming visitors reached INR1.26 trillion (US$18.8 billion), up 2.3% year-on-year.
The growth in arrivals can be partially attributed to the roll-out of the country’s e-tourist visa scheme, which was gradually expanded in 2015 and is now offered to the citizens of 113 countries entering India at 16 airports.
In December 2015, India welcomed a total of 913,000 international visitors, up 3.2% year-on-year. The USA was the country’s largest source market during the month, accounting for 18.7% of total arrivals, followed by Bangladesh (11.6%), the UK (11.6%), Australia (5.3%), Canada (4.2%) and Russia (3.7%).
And almost 50% of total arrivals entered India through Delhi or Mumbai airports last month. A further 6% arrived via the Haridaspur land border, which connects India with Bangladesh.
