India has expanded its tourist e-visa programme to 37 more countries.
The scheme was already in place for the citizens of 113 countries arriving at 16 Indian airports, including major source markets like the US, UK, China, Canada, Australia and Russia. This latest round of expansion takes the total number of countries and territories included in the e-visa programme to 150.
But the new rules will offer e-visa services to 37 more countries in Europe, Africa and Asia, including South Africa, Switzerland, Austria, Brunei, Serbia, Denmark, Greece, Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria and Zimbabwe.
The remaining countries on the list are Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Botswana, Cape Verde, Comoros, Croatia, Eritrea, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Iceland, Ivory Coast, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Moldova, Namibia, San Marino, Senegal, Slovakia, Swaziland, Tajikistan, Trinidad & Tobago and Zambia.
India started expanding its tourist e-visa system in November 2014, and progressively added more countries and made the service available at more Indian gateways during 2015.
A total of 445,300 e-tourist visas were issued at Indian airports last year, mainly to visitors from the US and UK. And a further 88,162 were issued in January 2016, accounting for approximately 10% of total arrivals to India during the month.
