India has issued almost 170,000 tourist e-visas in the first eight months of 2015.
Following the expansion of the programme last year, the country has seen an 893% jump in the number of e-visas issued, reaching a total of 169,976 in the January-August 2015 period.
In August 2015 alone, 22,286 tourists entered India on e-visas. The majority of these were from the US (25.9% of the total), followed by Germany (10.0%), UAE (8.9%), France (8.8%) and Australia (7.2%).
Delhi‘s Indira Gandhi International Airport issued the most e-visas (42.8% of the total) in August, followed by Mumbai Airport (23.4%), Bengaluru Airport (10.4%), Chennai Airport (9.1%) and Kochi Airport (5.4%).
India expanded its tourist e-visa scheme on 27 November 2014 and the service is now available to the citizens of 113 countries arriving at 16 Indian airports in India.
A total of 5.07 million overseas visitors travelled to India in January-August 2015, meaning that only 3.4% of arrivals used the e-visa scheme during this period.
