Domestic air traffic in India increased slightly in April 2014.
According to the latest data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Indian traffic, measured in revenue passenger kilometres, or RPK, climbed 2.7% last month compared to April 2013.
But this rate of growth did not match the 5.8% extra available seat capacity added by India’s airlines, which caused the country’s average cabin load factor to fall to just 73.9%.
Both the growth in RPK and average load factor failed the match the global average for domestic markets. Worldwide, domestic traffic climbed 5.8% in April, with load factors averaging 80.2%.
But April’s growth did mark a rebound for India’s aviation industry, following a poor March. Demand for domestic flights in India contracted 0.7% in March 2014, while loads averaged just 71.4%.
