Island in Shanghai likely to be new Disneyland
Shanghai is to start building its own Disneyland theme park after 2010, according to the China Business Journal, citing sources. The newspaper quoted a source as saying that the total investment in the projected theme park will also increase to RMB 40 billion, up from the previous RMB30 billion, according to a report in The Standard.
The park is also expected to be in a new place – Chongming island instead of the original Chuansha town in Shanghai’s Pudong district, the source was quoted saying.
The Shanghai Chuansha Disneyland project was stopped last year also because of the probe into the city’s pension fund scandal.
According to the newspaper report, The Standard said, Walt Disney Corporation has resumed talks with the Shanghai government recently for a possible shift in location.
Chuansha is only 10 minutes away from Shanghai Pudong International Airport, hence providing easy access for airport transit passengers to visit the park for up to 48 hours without needing a visa, The Standard said.
But as it is also within the Shanghai Pudong area, any future land expansion would be very difficult, it added.
Chongming Island, situated at the mouth of Yangtze River, has a population of 650,000 and an area of nearly 1,200 sqkm. Its main advantage over Chuansha is that it is “virgin territory,” more suitable for a theme park, according to China Business Journal.
It could adopt the same model as Disney World Orlando in Florida and be a “back to nature” park, it added.
