Japanese fishermen strike over fuel costs

Japan’s fishing industry held its first evernationwide strike yesterday in protest against rising fuel costs, the FinancialTimes has reported. The latest industry to vent their grievances over soaringfuel costs, the fishermen are already affecting supplies of sushi to Japanesedinner tables. The strike affected 200,000fishing boats in Japanese waters and overseas. The cost of heavy oil used infishing boats has tripled in the past five years to JPY115,000 (US$1,080) perkilolitre.
