The Jordan Tourism Board (JTB) has criticised media reports for ‘stereotyping’ the protests in the Middle East region and subsequently putting the destination ‘in the same basket of turbulent countries’. Nayef Al-Fayez, managing director of JTB, said that the organisation was trying to correct supposedly negative reporting and misconceptions surrounding Jordan following the protests in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. “JTB remains concerned that reporting of any healthy democratic and peaceful political activity in the Kingdom was immediately stereotyped as ‘unrest’ and ‘turbulent’,” its statement said. “Nayef Al-Fayez said negative reporting and misconception have mistakenly put Jordan in the same basket of turbulent countries.” The coverage has dented the tourism board’s expectations for a record tourism year despite a positive first month. Tourism revenue at the destination increased seven percent year-on-year for January, with a 6.1 percent rise in arrivals.
