A group of tourism bodies in troubled Myanmar are organising a familiarisation trip for foreign travel journalists and their families, the Myanmar Times has reported.
Union of Myanmar Travel Association (UMTA), Myanmar Marketing Committee (MMC) and Myanmar Hotelier Association (MHA) are hoping to show the outside world that Myanmar still has plenty the offer potential tourists, despite a catastrophic 12 months which has seen anti-government protests, subsequent bloody military crackdown and the devastation of Cyclone Nargis.
MMC Chairperson, Daw Su Su Tin, believes that the media can start the process of rebuilding Myanmar’s ailing tourism industry.
“Cyclone Nargis didn’t hit the main tourist destinations like Mandalay, Bagan and Inle Lake. And the situation in Yangon returned to normal very quickly,” she said. “We’re launching free trips for foreign media to observe Myanmar under the theme ‘Seeing is Believing’.”
A six-day trip will run from 27 September to 2 October, taking in the main tourism attractions of Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay and Inle Lake. The package includes accommodation, meals and visa costs.
