Major earthquake hit Christchurch
The New Zealand city of Christchurch has been hit by a 6.3-magnitude earthquake, causing buildings to collapse and streets to crack. The NZ Herald reported that quake lasted approximately a minute, severely shaking buildings in the South Island city. Christchurch’s historic cathedral is reported to have half collapsed, while a church on Durham Street has also been left in ruins. Christchurch airport has been closed. There have been no immediate reports of any casualties, but it is thought that the damage may be as bad as the 7.1-magnitude quake that hit the city on 3 September last year.
