Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board’s convention division Director Zulkefli Sharif’s statement at a new conference yesterday was the closest anyone has given by way of a launch date for the bureau which has been tossed around for a while.
Zulfefli could not give other details but added that it was important “not to cut the umbilical cord of the government” when it came to funds, hinting that the new bureau might not be a totally independent body.
He said Malaysia was focusing on reviving the MICE markets of Japan, South Korea as well a Europe.
Last year, Malaysia received some 820,000 MICE delegates and a revenue of RM2.6 billion (US$770 million) from the segment.
