Almost two thirds of travellers admit to taking something from their hotel room, a new study by TripAdvisor has revealed.
According to the company’s ‘Truth in Travel’ survey, 65% of global travellers, and 63% of Asian hotel guests, said they like to take a souvenir from their room, with toiletries being the most commonly pilfered items.
Rather more worryingly, one in four hoteliers reported that towels have gone missing following a guest’s stay. This is considerably less however, than the one-in-seven travellers that actually admitted to taking hotel towels home, representing a distinct trend within the survey, in terms of what guests admit to taking and what actually goes missing.
A further 10% of hoteliers reported clothes hangers going missing, while only 2% of guests said they took them, while 6% of hoteliers reported missing bathrobes – double the percentage of guests who admitted to taking them.
Other items both hoteliers reported missing and guests admitted to pilfering include stationary, ashtrays, tissues and minibar contents, while a small percentage of guests even admitted to taking lightbulbs and batteries from TV remote controls.
