MSC Cruises has announced a new joint venture with a Chinese firm to set up a travel agency to sell cruises in China.
The deal with Shanghai International Port Group is a prelude to the positioning of a MSC ship in Shanghai “in the near future,” according to the line’s CEO Pierfrancesco Vago.
“Partnerships are a cornerstone in MSC’s strategy,” he said as he announced the move on board the new MSC Poesia during her naming ceremony in Dover last weekend.
Vago said the Shanghai move was the “first concrete step” in MSC’s plans for China.
As well as the homeporting out of Shanghai, Vago also said MSC would target Chinese visitors to Europe, most of whom currently travel in organised coach tours.
He said the new joint venture travel agency aimed to shift some of this coach tour business to European cruises – and not exclusively to those operated by MSC.
