The upward trend of tourist arrivals to Nepal continued in the third month of the year 2011, marking a sustained period of growth in international visitor arrivals since June 2009. According to the figures released by Immigration Office at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), arrivals in March this year increased by 4.6% to 46,491 as compared to the same month last year. However, this growth is not as stable as it appears. The various source markets showed a good deal of volatility in their yoy growth rates. On aggregate, the South Asian segment registered a growth of 22.5%. India, a major tourist generating country for Nepal, recorded positive growth of 28% along with Sri Lanka and Pakistan with 38.3% and 6.8%, respectively. However, arrivals from Bangladesh declined by 2.5%. The European market also dipped in March, decreasing by 12.6%, as did arrivals from Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Tourism from the Western markets was propped up by visitors from the USA which saw a 22.7% yoy increase in traffic.
