The Cambodian resort town of Sihanoukville could become a new player on the conference and events scene, following the launch of a new MICE hotel this summer.
The 122-room New Hill Resort & Spa is expected to open in Sihanoukville in August 2014, providing a range of options for event planners, along with views of the Gulf of Thailand.
The hotel will be managed by the Asia Initiative Corporation (AIC), which launched last year and already has four properties, including the Angkor Heritage Boutique Hotel, the Hollywood Angkor Boutique Hotel and Bong Thom Homestay, all in Siem Reap.
Set on eight hectares of land at Victory Hill, the New Hill Resort will be able to cater to more than 500 delegates with multiple meeting rooms for large and small groups. Other property features include a large swimming pool, tennis court, gymnasium and a ‘sky bar’ offering 360-degree views of the area.
A second phase of development will include the construction of hillside villas, an outdoor camping and team-building area, plus more exhibition space.
“Sihanoukville’s reputation is growing on the global market,” said Seng Kha, director of tourism for Sihanouk province. “In 1991 we had just 34 rooms available for tourists. Now there are more than 5,000. The introduction of a second operator in the MICE market provides another dimension to what Sihanoukville can offer to NGOs, corporates and diplomatic communities,” he added.
Sihanoukville is located on the Gulf of Thailand, along the same coast as Thailand’s resort islands of Koh Chang and Koh Kood, and Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island.
