Another new passenger airline will take to the skies in China next week.
Yangtze River Express Airlines, which previously operated as a long-haul international cargo carrier, has moved into the passenger sector and will commence operations from Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport on 15 December 2015.
Its first flight will operate from Shanghai to beach resort of Sanya, Hainan province, with twice daily services using a Boeing 737 aircraft. In the immediate future, it plans to expand to destinations including Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou province, and Zhuhai, in Guangdong’s Pearl River Delta region.
Founded in 2002, Yangtze River Express is a subsidiary of HNA Group. In July 2015 the cargo carrier received approval to expand its scope of business to include domestic passenger services.
For the fast-expanding HNA Group, which also operates Beijing-based Hainan Airlines, the move will give it a strategic foothold in the Shanghai passenger market.
Two other cargo airlines, Zhejiang Loong Air and Donghai Airlines, have also launched passenger service in the last two years, and Yangtze River Express is one of two new Chinese passenger airlines that expect to commence operations this month, along with Colorful Guizhou Airlines.
