A new WiFi rental service has been launched in the EU today in an attempt to cut roaming costs for business travellers and holidaymakers. The rented devices, launched by Tep, turn 3G signals from overseas phone operators into a wireless connection to offer free internet browsing. Customers can opt to hire a smartphone with the capability or a pocket device that converts the signal to their phone, laptop or tablet. Users would also be able to make calls and text at local rates. Tomas Mendoza, founder of Tep believes the service could act as another ancillary sale. “Travellers want to use their smartphones to find restaurants and information about places to visit. Many simply want to keep in touch and share their experiences with friends and family at home via Facebook or other social media, but are being charged more than the cost of their flight to do so,” he explained. “Renting a Tep smartphone or pocket WiFi device will be become as commonplace as booking a hire car or a flight.” The devices can either be posted to a home address or hotel, or picked up from an airport. Customers can then return the rented item using a prepaid envelope and Tep said it would delete personal data from the device.
