Sixty three of the world’s top women golfers had a night of revelry and fun before the first tee-off at the HSBC Women’s Champions.
Held at the Raffles Hotel on Wednesday night, the welcome reception saw the likes of world No. 1 Lorena Ochoa from Mexico, defending champion Jiyai Shin from Korea and American superstar Michelle Wie.
Just for laughs, American golfers Christina Kim, 25, and Amanda Blumenherst, 26, took up positions at the bar to churn out versions of the iconic Singapore Sling – a cocktail of gin, brandy and pineapple juice.
Others were happy just to be women before golfers. Said American Natalie Gulbis, 26, ‘I spent most of every week of the past nine years in golfwear – it sure is nice to dress up for a change.’
German Sandra Gal, 24, agreed: ‘It is nice when you get to come to events as dressy as this one. It is not always easy to separate the socialising from the competing. It happens more in Asia – where the girls travel together and stay in the same hotel, so there are more opportunities to make friends.’
The HSBC Women’s Champions will end on Sunday at Tanah Merah Country Club. It has a total prize purse of US$1.3 million (SG$1.8 million).
