Air India has put a ban on offering free First Class upgrades to passengers, the Hindustan Times has reported. The move has been introduced as part of a series of new measures aimed at cutting costs.
Being a state-owned company, Air India reportedly used to get a large number of requests from passengers, including politicians, requesting upgrades. From now on however, the entitlement for travel on the First Class, even for airline executives, has been withdrawn, the newspaper quoted company sources as saying. These top executives would now be allowed to travel only on the Business Class, while the First Class would be reserved solely for those travelling on paid tickets.
A similar initiative has been implemented in regard to requests for allowing excess baggage free of charge. The newspaper quotes sources as saying that these measures are hoped to bring some “financial discipline” to the company.
In another move, Air India has pledged to fly at lower speeds in order to reduce the amount of fuel burned per flight.
