Chilika Lake is the largest brackish lake in Asia and a top tourist attraction in Orissa. In 2009, the natural site drew in 550,000 domestic and international tourists which is 60,000 more than 2008. This is a remarkable increase given the huge dip the global tourism industry endured through this period. Named as one of the six wetlands of international importance for Arctic and Central Asian waterfowl by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, the renowned scenic attraction draws vast numbers of visitors during the winter period when it comes alive with bird life. The total number of visitors has risen consistently for four years but last year saw the largest increase reports IANS.
