Philippine travel group wants incentives
Jose Clemente III, president of the Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA), was quoted in Inquirer.net saying that funding was sorely lacking.
The PTAA, which has about 490 travel agencies as members, called for the reorganisation and rationalisation of the Department of Tourism.
This would assure funding for the department and its attached agencies, and would give incentives for tourism facilities, Clemente was quoted saying.
He urged the government to pass the Tourism Bill that would create tourism ecozones.
Marciano Ragaza, PTAA immediate past president, was quoted saying that though the government had certified the bill as a priority, “nobody actually pushed for its passage”.
“In fact, the Department of Finance objected to it, because it felt that the incentives provided in the bill were too generous,” said Ragaza. “How can a department object to what the President certified as a priority bill?”
