Tourism minister John Penrose has abandoned plans to move the clocks forward an hour all year round, in a further contradiction to the government’s inbound tourism targets. It was expected that the government would look into bringing Britain’s clocks in line with Europe to encourage tourism. But Penrose has temporarily dismissed the idea and said he would need consent from the whole of the UK. However, he said the May Day bank holiday could be replaced by a national holiday and both St George’s Day and St David’s Day could become bank holidays. It was also hinted that ‘Trafalgar Day’ could be launched in October to make the tourism season longer. The UK government aims to attract four million extra tourists to British shores.
