Shanghai population hits 22 million

According to the recent Chinese census, the population of Shanghai is now 22.2 million. The figure represents a 15.6% increase from 2009, as more people flock to the city from rural areas. Population density in the city is 3,503 people per square kilometre – more than 20 times the national average. The latest figure means that Shanghai’s population now exceeds that of Sri Lanka.
