Singapore Airlines (SIA) saw its load factor slump 7.6 percentage points in March. The airline expanded its capacity 6.4% year-on-year, but this was not matched by its passenger traffic, which fell 3.6% compared to March 2010. All regional routes suffered a drop in traffic last month, led by the carrier’s European routes, which saw an 11% decline in revenue passenger kilometres (RPK). Routes to and from the Americas fell 8.9%, while those to East Asia dropped 5.0%. This caused load factor to slip from 80.8% in March 2010 to just 73.2% last month.
SIA also announced plans to increase fuel surcharges from 21 April 2011, with the charges now ranging from US$34 on Economy Class tickets to Southeast Asia to US$290 on First Class fares to the Americas.
